Ovaj rad ima za cilj da pruži sažeti prikaz žanrovkih poimanja i ponudi jedno shvatanje koje treba da doprinese izgrađivanju konzistentnog genološkog modela. Na početku se nalaze opisi shvatanja žanra od antičkih vremena do poststrukturalizma.
Zatim se u skladu sa lingvističkim i semiološkim određenjima teksta, žanr defiše kao kognitivna kategoriju, u isto vreme i produkt i proces, koja omogućava razumevanje, osećanje, spremnost i želju za stvaranje/prihvatanje/povezivanje tekstova, upućuje na način na koji se stvarnost doživljava i predstavlja, i određen je prepoznatljivim sintaksičkim, semantičkim i pragmatičnim svojstvima. Na kraju se isiče neophodnost proučavanja žanra iz navedenih perspektiva i ukazuje na izrazitu relativnost genoloških shvatanja.
